IMPAC5 now to be held 2 to 8 September 2022
Program proposal deadline moves to 20 October 2021
Vancouver, British Columbia — To better advance international efforts to protect the world ocean, and to ensure the best possible experience for Congress participants, the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) will now take place from 2-8 September 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with a program proposal submission deadline of 20 October 2021.
By moving the Congress dates, IMPAC5 will catch the wave of other important international conferences on ocean protection taking place in 2021-22 including:
- The 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15), taking place virtually from 11-15 October 2021 and in-person from 25 April to 8 May 2022 in Kunming China;
- The One Ocean Summit announced by French President Emmanuelle Macron during the IUCN World Conservation Congress, taking place in France in late 2021 or early 2022.
- The United Nations Ocean Conference, taking place from 27 June to 1 July 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal
Holding IMPAC5 in September 2022 will allow attendees to reflect on progress made during these international meetings and come prepared to chart a detailed course to protect 30% of the World Ocean by 2030.
IMPAC5 will take place one year after the 26th IUCN World Conservation Congress and will serve as an opportunity to gauge progress on commitments made in Marseille, France in 2021.
“Late summer is a beautiful time to be in Vancouver and this spectacular seaside venue will be an inspiring environment for the world to come together to develop the roadmap to protecting 30% of the global ocean by 2030”, said Sabine Jessen, Executive Director of the IMPAC5 Secretariat.
New deadline and expanded eligibility for virtual and in-person presentations
In response to requests from around the globe, the IMPAC5 Secretariat is pleased to announce that the deadline for proposal submissions for in-person, virtual and hybrid presentations is being extended to 20 October 2021.
Also, applicants may now apply to participate in more than one presentation at IMPAC5. For example, an applicant can submit proposals for an individual presentation and to contribute to Symposia and Knowledge Sharing Sessions.
As well, participants in group presentations no longer need to also apply individually. IMPAC5 will contact coordinators of Symposia and Knowledge Sharing Session if more information on participants is required.
The Secretariat wishes to thank all those who have already submitted their proposals ahead of the original deadline. These timely submissions will help to advance the planning for what promises to be an exceptionally rich and inspiring Congress.
